Coach Hugo Broos Rallies Bafana Bafana Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifier Against Zimbabwe
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his players will “fight like lions” when they face Zimbabwe in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The encounter, scheduled for Friday at 6 pm, could determine whether South Africa keeps its qualification hopes alive. Broos remains confident that his squad has what it takes to secure victory.
Bafana Bafana Coach Rallies Team Before Must-Win Game
Broos expressed strong faith in his squad’s resilience and unity, saying the team remains just as capable as it was before the recent setback.
He emphasized that Bafana’s quality, mentality, and determination have not diminished, despite the off-field challenges.
The Belgian coach vowed that his players would give their all in the crucial clash against Zimbabwe, promising that they would “fight like lions” to secure victory and keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
“I feel the group knows that they are not worse than two months ago. They are the same team with the same quality and fantastic mentality,” he said.
“[Friday] at 6 pm, we will fight like lions because we want to win that game. You can be sure of it.”
Bafana Must Win Against Zimbabwe, Says Broos
Broos stressed that the immediate focus for Bafana Bafana is securing a win against Zimbabwe, describing it as the most important task ahead.
“The most important thing is that we beat Zimbabwe. I know that in this team, there’s such a mentality that makes me confident as a coach when you have two very important games in front of you,” Broos said.
He told his players to maintain belief in themselves, adding that their quality and spirit have not changed despite the setback.
“The opponents aren’t twice better than two months before. Everything is still the same. The only thing is if we had that three points, we would qualify if we win against Zimbabwe.”
“We Weren’t Beaten on the Pitch”
Broos expressed his disappointment at the way public confidence has wavered since the points deduction, insisting that his team’s performance on the field remains strong.
“I was a little bit disappointed the moment when the three points was deducted. Some people start to doubt that we can qualify to go to America,” said Broos.
He emphasized that the team did not lose those points in competition but through an administrative setback.
“I never understood doubters because we were not beaten on the pitch, not directly. If we were beaten by Lesotho or Nigeria, maybe it’s possible. But now, we played good games against Nigeria and Lesotho. Why should we start doubting now?”
