Western Cape’s high crime rate due to lack of resources, says provincial deputy top cop

Western Cape deputy police commissioner, Preston Voskuil, said that the high rate of crime in the province was due to the overwhelming challenge of a lack of resources.

Voskuil was speaking at the memorial service of 30-year-old slain police officer, Akho Ndzing, at the OR Tambo Community Hall in Khayelitsha on Thursday.

With an estimated population of more than 2 million people, Voskuil said they did not have enough boots on the ground to combat crime in the township.

“In the Khayelitsha policing precinct, we have approximately 350 members at the Khayelitsha police stations.”

Khayelitsha CPF chairperson, Monde Bambelo, said that certain resources within the SAPS were not well maintained.

“The challenge we have there, we do have police but not enough vehicles. Even the vehicles that are there, they take too long in terms of repairs, even a simple thing as a tyre. You see, if I were to take you now to Khayelitsha police station, you will see a van there, the only problem with that van, it’s just a flat tyre.”
