Why Lorch Won’t Be Reuniting with Rulani Mokwena at MC Alger
Speculation about yet another reunion between Thembinkosi Lorch and coach Rulani Mokwena has been put to rest, with fresh details emerging on why the two won’t be teaming up at MC Alger.
In recent weeks, Lorch had been linked to a possible move to Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco. His parent club, Mamelodi Sundowns, reportedly agreed to a deal with Wydad. However, according to reports, negotiations between the player and the club have stalled, mainly because of Lorch’s high salary demands.

With the Wydad talks hitting a wall, rumours started swirling that Lorch could follow Mokwena to Algeria, especially after MC Alger unveiled the former Sundowns coach. The pair have a long history, having worked together at Orlando Pirates, Sundowns, and briefly during Mokwena’s short stay at Wydad.
However, according to Algerian outlet WinWin, a source close to the situation has confirmed that Lorch is not eligible to play for MC Alger. This is due to Algerian league regulations, which prevent clubs from signing foreign players over the age of 30.
Insiders also clarified that Lorch’s transfer issues are strictly about finances—there was never any serious talk of him joining Mokwena’s new project in Algeria.
Mokwena Building His MC Alger Backroom Team
Meanwhile, Mokwena has wasted no time assembling his technical staff at MC Alger. He has confirmed that long-time colleague Wendell Robinson will be joining him as goalkeeper coach. Robinson previously worked with Mokwena at Sundowns but left the club after Manqoba Mngqithi’s departure last season and briefly worked at AmaZulu.
Also joining Mokwena’s setup is Sibusiso Mahlangu, who worked with him at both Sundowns and Wydad, serving as a conditioning coach.
Mokwena has also secured the services of Belgian coach Enzo Donis, who made a name for himself as a set-piece specialist during his time as AS Vita’s assistant coach. Donis, just 29 years old, leaves his current role with Togo’s national team to reunite with Mokwena in Algeria.
