Why Virginia Mabiza Joined Mnangagwa’s Vatican Trip
The presence of Attorney General Virginia Mabiza in the delegation that accompanied President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Vatican for meetings with Pope Francis has triggered heated debate online.
Speculation grew so much that the Office of the Attorney-General issued a detailed statement defending why she was included in the high-profile trip.
In its defence, the office argued that Mabiza’s participation was not just symbolic but an important part of Zimbabwe’s diplomacy. They said her presence showed the country’s commitment to justice, governance, and ethical leadership, while also helping to strengthen ties with the Vatican. The statement painted the visit as a “historic milestone” for Zimbabwe, blending legal expertise with moral and spiritual dialogue.
The statement reads:
“The recent visit of the Attorney-General of Zimbabwe to the Vatican, alongside the President, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s diplomatic and international relations. This distinguished delegation underscores Zimbabwe’s commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and cooperation on global issues, ranging from justice and governance to humanitarian and spiritual matters.
The Attorney-General’s presence at such a revered global institution highlights Zimbabwe’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and promoting ethical leadership on the international stage. Together with the President, the Attorney-General’s engagement with the Vatican not only strengthens bilateral ties but also reinforces Zimbabwe’s role as a proactive and principled member of the global community.
This historic visit reflects a visionary approach to diplomacy, one that harmonizes legal expertise with moral guidance, paving the way for future collaborations that will benefit Zimbabwe and its people. It is an inspiring testament to the leadership’s resolve to build bridges across cultures and faiths, fostering peace, justice, and shared values worldwide.”
Government spokesperson Ndavaningi Mangwana also weighed in to clarify Mabiza’s role. He explained that as the government’s chief legal adviser, her participation in international negotiations was crucial. He added that the Vatican discussions included the death penalty, a reform area where Mabiza has been directly involved, making her presence highly relevant.
“As the government’s chief legal adviser, the Attorney General’s role in state-to-state negotiations and interactions with legal implications is crucial,” he said.
Mangwana further noted that Mabiza is a practising Catholic, suggesting that her faith background added an extra dimension to her engagement with the Vatican.
