Woman Accused Of Staging Her Own Kidnapping After R40,000 Ransom Demand

A South African woman who was found injured after her family received a R40,000 ransom demand is now accused of staging her own kidnapping with two alleged accomplices.

Ntombifuthi Mavis Rumo, 37, was found along Vlakfontein Road, near Marikana informal settlement, on October 10, 2026, after her family reported that she had been abducted. She has since appeared at the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court, where she faces a charge of defeating the administration of justice.

Family Received R40,000 Ransom Demand

According to IOL, the alleged kidnapping was reported to police on October 8 after a family member received a ransom demand through Rumo’s cellphone.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the suspects later contacted the family again and indicated that they would leave the woman along Vlakfontein Road.

Police officers accompanied the relatives to the location, where they found Rumo with injuries to her hands. She was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

At the time, the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the ransom demand were being investigated as a kidnapping case.

Woman Allegedly Conspired With Two Men

The investigation has since led to allegations that the kidnapping was staged.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Rumo allegedly met with Bonginkosi Mndebele, 27, and a third suspect on October 7. The three allegedly agreed to fake her abduction because they were experiencing financial difficulties.

They allegedly contacted Rumo’s family and demanded money for her release. When the family failed to pay, the suspects allegedly abandoned her along Vlakfontein Road on October 12 and instructed her relatives to collect her.

The third suspect has not yet been charged.

Rumo Arrested As Police Investigate Alleged Hoax

Rumo was arrested on October 20 after her husband brought her to the police, according to Mahanjana. She subsequently identified Mndebele to investigators.

Rumo appeared briefly in the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court, while Mndebele was absent because he is in hospital. Both face charges of defeating the administration of justice.

The matter was postponed to October 29 for further bail investigations and to allow Mndebele to appear in court.

The State intends to oppose bail for both accused.
