Zambian football legend Rainford Kalaba is still alive despite several reports saying that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner has died. His former club TP Mazembe had rushed to social media to pass a condolence message, a move which they have since apologised for.
“Go in peace our “Maestro” That’s for you! Rainford KALABA did not survive a road accident this Saturday 13 April in Zambia between Kafwe and Lusaka. Master…Master… Master…” the initial statement read.
The 37-year-old is in critical condition after his car was involved in a serious accident this Saturday and reports suggest that the lady he was with in the car died on the spot. We just heard from the medical team that took on Maestro Rainford KALABA. Declared dead by the emergency services who received the former TPM player victim of a serious traffic accident, the doctors who received him have just placed him in an artificial coma but his situation is critical, ” read Mazembe’s apology.
The former Zambian international was part of the 2012 AFCON-winning Zambian team and at club level he won the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup with TP Mazembe.
Authorities at University Teaching Hospital have also confirmed that the Chipolopolo legend is alive but in critical condition.
