ZESA Appoints Interim Leaders Following Sydney Gata’s Sudden Death

ZESA Holdings has announced temporary leadership changes in the wake of the unexpected death of executive chairman Dr. Sydney Gata. The power utility, now under the Mutapa Investment Fund, is also fast-tracking structural changes to its leadership model.

Nduna and Nyachowe Step In

Veteran board member Albert Joel Nduna has been appointed interim board chairman, while engineer Cletus Nyachowe has taken over as acting group CEO. The changes were communicated in an internal memo seen by ZimLive.

ZESA is currently undergoing a restructuring process that will see the position of executive chairman scrapped entirely. The company will instead separate the roles, appointing a non-executive chairperson and a CEO.

Engineer Nyachowe’s appointment is effective from July 17.

Nyachowe brings a deep well of experience to the top job. He joined ZESA in 1988 and has held several senior positions, including head of Powertel Communications, the country’s first data-focused telecoms provider. He has worked across grid management, group operations, international energy development, and regional renewable energy consulting. He also serves on the board of the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.

Nduna is a seasoned business executive with over three decades in senior roles. He currently chairs the Insurance and Pensions Commission and holds several non-executive board positions.

Management Backs New Leaders to Steer Transition

ZESA’s executive director for human capital, Fortune Sambo, expressed confidence in the new leadership team. He said their combined expertise would help the company remain focused on national development goals, including the ambitious target of universal electricity and data access by 2030.

While Gata’s tenure was marked by progress in generation capacity, frequent power cuts remain a challenge. Nyachowe and Nduna are now expected to maintain momentum on major infrastructure upgrades and ongoing public–private partnerships.

ZESA has begun the search for permanent appointments, with more updates expected soon.
