ZESA donates big to Bulawayo City Council

ZESA Holdings subsidiary Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has extended a helping hand to the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) by donating 42 tonnes of coal ash to assist in covering open pits across the city.

According to the latest BCC report on environmental issues, the pits located in Parklands, near Fairview Primary School, have already been filled by the council’s works department. The minutes read:

“The Zimbabwe Power Company donated 42 tons of coal ash for covering the pits with the works department ferrying the coal ash to the site. The donation went a long way to assisting in solving the illegal operations.

A letter of appreciation has since been written in terms of the donation policy. A total of 52 surveillance patrols were conducted in Greater Bulawayo.”

The initiative has been hailed as a significant step toward addressing illegal sand extraction and improving community safety in affected areas.

Council Generates Revenue from Pit Sand Sales

The council also reported moderate income from pit sand sales at two designated sites, where 25 trucks collected sand, generating US$340 in revenue. Between January and August 2025, a total of 244 trucks were recorded, showing steady activity in the regulated sand extraction process.

Animal Control Challenges Persist

Despite these positive developments, the BCC continues to face persistent challenges with animal control across the city. The minutes noted ongoing issues with stray donkeys:

“Donkeys were a menace in the city, especially in suburbs such as Cowdray Park, Pumula, Magwegwe North and other suburbs which were close to peri-urban areas.

Lands inspectorate was highly incapacitated to clear these donkeys around the suburbs and peri urban areas due to transport challenges, considering that rangers utility vehicle (803) was still detained at top workshop.”

The council remains hopeful that continued collaboration with partners such as ZPC will enhance its ability to tackle environmental and urban management challenges more effectively.
