Zimbabwe could be set for a major boost after reportedly making progress with Chelsea youngster Shumaira Mheuka.
According to Southern Africa Football News, Zimbabwe FA president Nqobile Magwizi personally approached both players’ families.
The reported discussions focused on convincing the England youth internationals to represent Zimbabwe at senior level.
Mheuka currently represents England Under-21s, while Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni is also part of the setup.
However, Zimbabwe reportedly made significant progress with Mheuka during the discussions.
Mheuka reportedly commits to Zimbabwe
Southern Africa Football News reports that Mheuka has agreed to play for Zimbabwe at senior level.
The report describes the Chelsea forward’s decision as a “done deal” for the Warriors.
Mheuka has progressed through England’s youth system and currently represents the Under-21 side.
Therefore, his reported decision could become an important development for Zimbabwe’s national team.
The youngster was born in England but has Zimbabwean eligibility through his family background.
Consequently, Zimbabwe could potentially add another promising attacking option to its senior squad.
However, his reported commitment still needs to translate into an official senior appearance.
Nyoni talks remain ongoing
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s approach for Nyoni reportedly remains at the negotiation stage.
Southern Africa Football News says discussions with the Liverpool youngster and his family are continuing.
The report attributes the information to Alois Bunjiira, described as a source close to both families.
According to the report, Nyoni is also being encouraged to choose Zimbabwe over England.
The Liverpool midfielder has already represented England at youth level.
Therefore, Zimbabwe would need to convince him before he makes his senior international decision.
For now, Mheuka appears closer to choosing Zimbabwe, while Nyoni’s situation remains unresolved.
Both youngsters could eventually become eligible for Zimbabwe’s senior team if they complete the necessary international switch.
