Zimbabwe-Bound Bus Plunges Into Cliff in South Africa, Multiple People Feared Dead

A bus traveling from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe plunged down a cliff near Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, South Africa.

Several people are feared dead.

The accident occurred along the N1 highway outside Makhado town in Limpopo province, near Ingwe Lodge — at the same spot where 36 Zimbabweans and eight Malawians were killed in a similar accident in October last year.

Multiple Fatalities and Injuries Reported

South Africa’s Department of Traffic and Community Safety confirmed that the bus remains trapped down the cliff as rescue workers continue operations at the scene

In a statement, the department said a bus carrying passengers lost control before falling into a ditch.

“At this stage, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown,” the department said.

“However, it is clear that there are multiple fatalities and injuries. A competent authority will confirm the numbers in due course.”

Authorities have not yet established whether all the passengers on board were Zimbabwe-bound.

“The vehicle remains in the ditch, making it difficult to determine the exact number of occupants at the time of the incident,” the department added.

Road Closed, Alternative Route Announced

The affected portion of the N1 has been closed to traffic to allow emergency services to carry out rescue operations.

Motorists have been advised to use the alternative route via Nzhelele’s R523 road until further notice.

Limpopo’s Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye, is expected to visit the accident scene later on Thursday morning.

Authorities say further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
