Zimbabwe Cricket Vice Chairman Sylvester Matshaka Dies At 76
Zimbabwe Cricket Vice Chairman Sylvester Matshaka has died at the age of 76 after a short illness. The long-serving cricket administrator passed away at West End Clinic in Harare on Friday, 24 July 2026. Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed his death, bringing to an end nearly two decades of service to the organisation. As of today, 26 July 2026, tributes continue to pour in for the veteran administrator whose leadership extended beyond cricket into education and public service.
Zimbabwe Cricket Pays Tribute To Sylvester Matshaka
Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed Matshaka’s passing and remembered his contribution to the game.
Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said:
“Today, Zimbabwe Cricket has lost not only a distinguished vice chairman but also a wise counsellor, a principled leader and a dear friend whose service to the game was defined by humility, integrity and selfless devotion.”
He added:
“For close to two decades, Sylvester dedicated his life to strengthening Zimbabwe Cricket. His wisdom, calm leadership and unwavering commitment helped shape the organisation through significant moments in our history. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Zimbabwe Cricket said Matshaka joined the board in 2006 before becoming vice chairman in 2015, serving the organisation for almost 20 years. During that time, he was part of the leadership that oversaw Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket in 2011 while supporting grassroots development and financial restructuring initiatives.
Education Career And Lasting Legacy
Away from cricket, Matshaka built an extensive career in education and government service.
He served as headmaster of Marlborough High School, President of the National Association of Secondary School Heads, Provincial Education Director for Mashonaland East and later Deputy Director of Sport and Culture.
On Saturday, 25 July 2026, players from Zimbabwe and India wore black armbands during the second T20 International in Harare in his honour, reflecting the respect he commanded within the cricket community.
Zimbabwe Cricket said burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
Matshaka’s contribution to Zimbabwean cricket and education leaves behind a legacy spanning several decades.
