Detectives from Zimbabwe police arrested a suspect last week as he sat, utterly relaxed, inside a luxury car reported stolen from neighbouring South Africa. The man, identified as Geoffrey Chihuri, was allegedly enjoying a moment of peace in the unregistered white Nissan Magnite while it was parked at the Yadah Hotel complex in Waterfalls, Harare.
Acting on a tip-off from a confidential informant, officers moved in and secured an immediate arrest. Rather than simply charging him, however, investigators employed a clever strategy. They persuaded Chihuri to cooperate with their operation, using him as bait to ensnare his alleged accomplices.

Following his detention, Chihuri is said to have provided information that led police to his three associates. In a coordinated operation, Vincent Luwizhi, Obvious Nkomo, and Blessed Kambeni were subsequently lured to a meeting point within Harare’s bustling Central Business District, where they were taken into custody without incident. The four men have since appeared before Harare Regional Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa, although they were not required to enter a plea.
Upon interrogation, the group’s story unfolded. They claimed to have acquired the vehicle from unnamed South African nationals during a meeting near the border towns of Rutenga and Beitbridge just a day before the arrests. A spokesperson for the investigating team stated,
“Checks were made with Interpol National Criminal Bureau Harare database, and it was confirmed that the car was stolen from South Africa.”
A Separate Ring Targets Motorists
In a separate incident, police have announced the breakup of a violent armed robbery gang specialising in carjacking. Four individuals, Wellington Jinya, Nyasha Mushure, Tatenda Maphosa, and Edmore Muchenje, are facing eight counts of motor vehicle theft. Their method, according to authorities, was particularly brazen.

Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, a spokesperson for the ZRP Criminal Investigations Department (CID), explained the gang’s modus operandi.
“The accused persons, together with their accomplices who are still at large, would masquerade as genuine travellers soliciting lifts from unsuspecting motorists,” she said. “Along the way, they would rob the victims of their motor vehicles and other valuables.”
Their spree ended on 4th September 2025 after an intelligence-led operation in Chinhoyi. The subsequent arrests led to the recovery of a terrifying arsenal, including an AK-47 rifle, a Retay pistol, a knife, and various stolen goods like cellphones and a laptop.
