Zimbabwe Police Arrest Chinese National Xu Liyin On Interpol Red Notice Over 2023 Mega Fraud

Zimbabwe Police Arrest Chinese National On Interpol Red Notice

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the arrest of a Chinese national wanted by Beijing for a multi-million-dollar fraud, nabbing the fugitive right off the streets of Harare following a high-stakes global manhunt.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) announced on Wednesday evening that Xu Liyin was cornered by law enforcement in Harare. The suspect was the subject of an INTERPOL Red Notice, placing him among the world’s most wanted economic fugitives. Authorities have revealed that the arrest followed a fraud committed in China in 2023, and the swift capture was the result of a secretive, tightly coordinated operation involving police in Zimbabwe, China, and the global policing body.

International Manhunt Ends In Harare

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the operation marks a significant victory for international policing collaboration.

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Xu Liyin in Harare. The suspect was on an INTERPOL Red Notice for a fraud case committed in China in 2023. His arrest follows close cooperation and strong coordination between law enforcement agencies in Zimbabwe, China and INTERPOL.”

The statement, posted on the police force’s official X account, added that the force remains dedicated to its mandate.

“The ZRP remains committed to upholding the law and strengthening international policing partnerships.”

While police have not yet released the exact nature of the fraud or the specific financial damages, sources indicate the amounts involved are substantial, believed to run into millions of US dollars.

Xu Liyin is currently in custody in Zimbabwe as authorities begin the meticulous legal processes required to facilitate his extradition back to China. It remains unclear whether Xu holds valid travel documents for Zimbabwe or if he entered the country illegally.

No Safe Haven For Fugitives

The arrest sends a clear message that Zimbabwe is unwilling to serve as a hideout for international fugitives. Legal experts say the swift action demonstrates that the country’s police force is actively engaging with global partners to uphold cross-border justice.

Zimbabwe has, in recent years, sought to rebuild and strengthen its relationships with international law enforcement bodies, including INTERPOL. This arrest is seen as a direct result of those efforts.

Police have not disclosed where exactly in Harare Xu was arrested, nor have they confirmed if he was residing in the country or merely passing through. Officials also remain tight-lipped on whether any local accomplices are being sought.

The Chinese embassy in Harare has not yet issued a public statement regarding the arrest. However, given the close political and economic ties between Harare and Beijing, diplomatic cooperation in the extradition process is expected to be swift.
