Zimbabwe Says Only 4 Bodies Can Be Returned As Russia War Death Toll Rises To 18

Zimbabwe Struggles To Repatriate Bodies As Russia War Death Toll Rises

Zimbabwe says only four bodies of its citizens killed in the Russia-Ukraine war can currently be returned home, as the number of Zimbabweans who have died in the conflict rises to 18, amid growing concern over recruitment networks luring locals into foreign battlefields.

The latest update was shared on 31 March 2026 by Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana, who revealed that documentation challenges were complicating repatriation efforts even as more Zimbabweans are confirmed dead.

Mangwana posted on X on Tuesday, 31 March 2026:

“TRAFFICKED TO BE A FOREIGN FIGHTER
The number of Zimbabweans killed in a foreign conflict is now 18. The State is seized with the repatriation of only 4 of those as there are issues around the documentation around the others.”

His remarks come just days after authorities confirmed that 15 Zimbabweans had died after being lured into fighting for Russia in the ongoing war with Ukraine.

Death Toll Rises Days After Government Confirmed 15 Deaths

On 25 March 2026, Information Minister Zhemu Soda revealed that 15 Zimbabweans had already died in the conflict, while dozens remained trapped in the war zone.

Speaking in Harare on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, Soda described the situation as serious and complex.

“Fifteen Zimbabweans have died while fighting on the Russian side in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Sixty-six others remain in the conflict zone, and government is actively working on their return.”

He also confirmed that the government had begun diplomatic and logistical processes to bring the bodies home.

“Regarding the deceased, government is actively engaged in complex diplomatic and logistical efforts required to repatriate the remains.”

Soda added that efforts were also underway to rescue Zimbabweans still caught in the conflict.

“We are also engaging relevant stakeholders to facilitate the safe return of Zimbabwean nationals who are still alive.”

The revelation marked the first official acknowledgement of the scale of Zimbabwean involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zimbabweans Lured With Promises Of Jobs

According to BBC News, published five days ago, Zimbabweans were recruited through agents offering lucrative employment opportunities abroad, only to later find themselves deployed to the battlefield.

Authorities said the recruitment involved deception and exploitation, with many recruits allegedly unaware that they would be sent into combat zones.

“It is a sophisticated scheme of deception, exploitation, and human trafficking that has already resulted in the loss of Zimbabwean lives,” Soda said.

Authorities also warned that recruiters often disappear once individuals are injured, captured or killed, leaving families without information or financial support.

“Recruiters often vanish once a recruit is injured, captured, or killed, leaving relatives with no financial support or information.”

Reports also indicate that more than 60 Zimbabweans remain trapped in the conflict zone, while similar recruitment trends have been observed in other African countries including Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Mangwana indicated that documentation challenges were slowing repatriation efforts, with only four bodies currently being processed for return to Zimbabwe.

“The State is seized with the repatriation of only 4 of those as there are issues around the documentation around the others.”

Authorities continue to warn Zimbabweans to verify overseas job offers and avoid informal recruitment networks as diplomatic efforts to bring survivors home continue.
