Zimbabwe to Introduce AI in Schools by 2027 in Major Education Overhaul
Zimbabwe is preparing to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its national school curriculum by 2027, in a move aimed at equipping learners with future-ready skills and positioning the country as a technology producer rather than just a consumer.
Speaking at a recent policy roundtable in Victoria Falls, Information, Communication Technology Minister Tatenda Mavetera said the government is working closely with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to incorporate AI into the learning system.

Strategy Targets Skills and Innovation
The curriculum reform is part of a broader Artificial Intelligence Strategy recently launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The plan is designed to accelerate national development and improve competitiveness across various sectors.
At the heart of the strategy is a strong focus on skills development, with authorities aiming to prepare young Zimbabweans for emerging industries driven by technology. Beyond schools, the government also plans to roll out AI literacy programmes, mentorship initiatives and skills development frameworks to build a capable workforce.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Take Priority
The strategy also emphasises the need for strong digital infrastructure. Minister Mavetera highlighted connectivity as a critical enabler, likening it to a foundation necessary for widespread AI adoption.
Plans are underway to explore high-capacity data centres and promote local data hosting, supported by existing laws such as the Cyber and Data Protection Act. These efforts are expected to strengthen data sovereignty while supporting technological growth.
Local Values to Shape AI Development
Authorities say the country’s AI approach will not simply mirror global trends but will be rooted in local values. The government intends to integrate cultural principles such as Ubuntu into technological advancement, ensuring innovation reflects Zimbabwe’s identity while remaining globally relevant.
Key Sectors Set for Transformation
The AI strategy identifies agriculture, mining and tourism as priority sectors under the National Development Strategy 2. Officials believe integrating AI into these industries could significantly boost productivity, efficiency and economic growth.
Partnerships and Investment Opportunities
To drive implementation, the government is establishing an inter-ministerial committee and plans to set up a private sector-led AI institute. Businesses are being encouraged to invest in both AI hardware and software, with officials pointing to rapid global industry growth as a sign of untapped potential.
The rollout will follow a phased approach, starting with foundational systems and policies, followed by sector integration, international collaboration and continuous evaluation.
Addressing Risks and Challenges
While optimistic about AI’s potential, authorities acknowledged risks such as misinformation and deepfake technologies. Calls have been made for a dedicated implementation budget and a clear investment roadmap to ensure responsible and effective adoption.
The initiative marks a significant step in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation agenda, as the country positions itself to harness the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence.
