Zimbabwe Weather Alert: MSD Warns Of Thunderstorms And Hail This Week

Zimbabwe Weather Warning: Thunderstorms, Hail And Heavy Rain To Hit Several Provinces This Week

Zimbabwe is bracing for scattered thunderstorms, possible hailstorms and localised heavy downpours between Tuesday, 27 October, and Thursday, 29 October 2026. The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) and the Department of Civil Protection issued the advisory on Monday, 26 October, warning residents, travellers and farmers to prepare for changing weather conditions.

The forecast indicates that the storms will move across different parts of the country over three days. Although the advisory carries a Level 0 status, indicating minimal overall impact despite a high probability of the forecast conditions occurring, authorities have highlighted several potential hazards.

Which Zimbabwean Provinces Will Be Affected?

The MSD expects thunderstorms to begin on Tuesday afternoon in southern and western areas, including Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, Masvingo and southern parts of Manicaland.

By Wednesday, 28 October, the weather system is expected to shift northwards as cool, moist south-easterly winds stabilise conditions across the southern half of the country.

Harare Metropolitan, northern Manicaland and all Mashonaland provinces are expected to experience thunderstorm activity through Thursday, 29 October.

Lightning, Flash Floods And Crop Damage Risks

The Department of Civil Protection has warned that the storms could bring lightning strikes, sudden flash floods in low-lying areas and urban centres, and strong winds that may damage buildings, uproot trees and affect crops.

Farmers have also been urged to take precautions. Rainfall could affect grain quality and increase moisture levels, creating conditions that encourage fungal diseases in mature crops.

Residents are advised to seek shelter inside sturdy buildings during lightning and avoid standing beneath tall trees or poles. Households should secure rooftops and loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds.

Travellers and people planning water-based activities have been urged to postpone aquatic trips where necessary. Farmers should provide livestock with adequate shelter and feed while remaining alert to possible waterborne diseases.

With the forecast covering several provinces, residents are encouraged to follow official weather updates and take precautions throughout the three-day period.
