Zimbabwe’s Young Warriors have launched their first-ever FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival campaign with an impressive victory. The team defeated Cambodia 3-2 in their opening Group C clash in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The historic win gives Zimbabwe an early boost as they compete on the international stage for the first time. Ngoni Tombo starred with two goals, while Adam Adamu also found the net.
Tombo inspires Zimbabwe to historic victory
Zimbabwe wasted little time making their presence felt against Cambodia. Tombo opened the scoring in the third minute, giving the Young Warriors an early advantage.
The youngsters continued pushing forward and doubled their lead through Adamu in the 27th minute. Tombo then struck again four minutes later, completing his brace and putting Zimbabwe 3-0 ahead.
However, Cambodia refused to surrender and responded with two goals. Their comeback created a tense finish, forcing Zimbabwe to defend their advantage.
Nevertheless, the Young Warriors remained composed and protected their lead until the final whistle. The 3-2 result secured three valuable points and gave the team a memorable start to their maiden campaign.
Young Warriors prepare for tougher challenges
Zimbabwe must now maintain their momentum as the group-stage competition continues. Their upcoming opponents include the Republic of Ireland, Montenegro, Nicaragua and England.
The tournament features an eight-a-side format, with matches consisting of two 20-minute halves. Organisers will divide teams into six performance tiers after the group stage, based on their results.
This structure ensures every participating nation remains involved until the final matchday. Consequently, Zimbabwe will have further opportunities to test their abilities against international opposition.
The opening victory provides an encouraging foundation for the Young Warriors. Their next challenge is to build on this performance and continue making their historic tournament debut count.
