Road Safety Tops Holiday Agenda

In a strongly worded statement, the ZRP revealed that adequate manpower has been deployed on the country’s roads to enforce traffic regulations and ensure that travelers reach their destinations safely.

The police warned that “decisive action will be taken” against drivers flouting road rules.

Motorists operating unroadworthy vehicles, pirate taxis (mushika shika), buses without permits, unregistered or plateless cars, and those caught driving under the influence of alcohol will face arrest or have their vehicles impounded.

Public Transport Operators Warned Against Overloading and Using Touts

ZRP also issued a warning to public service vehicle operators not to overload passengers or engage touts, some of whom have been reported to engage in criminal activities that threaten public safety. The public was urged to report such behavior.

“Drivers are encouraged to cooperate with police officers on checkpoints and patrols to collectively promote road safety,” said the statement.

Anti-Crime Operations Intensified Across the Country

The Commissioner-General of Police has directed that officers be deployed to patrol residential, industrial, and Central Business Districts to deal with criminal elements, particularly drug peddlers and illicit substance abusers.

Crack teams formed to combat armed robbery will be on standby and are expected to respond swiftly to any reports.

Public Urged to Avoid Carrying Large Sums of Cash

The ZRP has advised both companies and individuals not to carry or keep large sums of money at homes or business premises. Additionally, people were urged not to share financial information carelessly, as this could lead to criminal leaks.

“The public is further warned that the police will take stern action on all unlicensed liquor outlets,” read the statement. Licensed operators who breach operating hours will also be dealt with accordingly.

Parents Urged to Monitor Children During Holidays

As schools close for the holidays, the ZRP encouraged parents to properly supervise children to avoid incidents of rape, drug abuse, and other dangers. They also advised against night travel for schoolchildren.

Police Call for Community Cooperation

ZRP encouraged members of the public to report criminal activities to their nearest police stations or reach out via the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.

The police concluded by wishing all Zimbabweans a “crime and accident-free Heroes and Defence Forces Holiday.”
