Zimbabwe Mourns ZRP Officer Killed By Mutangadura Murder Suspect
A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer was shot dead inside Sanyati Police Station by a suspect linked to the murder of Ruwa businessman Joseph “Mutangaz” Mutangadura. Constable Courage Muchechesi died after the gunman entered the charge office and opened fire.
A suspect’s account of a fatal confrontation
According to a video posted by ZimLive on 26 October 2025, the suspect narrated his own version of events. He claimed detectives from CID Homicide Harare had earlier raided his home, leading to an exchange of gunfire that left one officer injured. The suspect managed to escape from the police officers during the shootout.
The suspect alleged that upon returning to his property, he discovered US$1,000 (approximately R18,400) missing. He said this prompted him to go to Sanyati Police Station in search of the CID officers, whom he suspected of stealing his money.
When he arrived, the suspect said he found Constable Courage Muchechesi, who was the duty officer at the time. In his narration, he claimed that he ordered Muchechesi to lie on the ground. The constable, however, refused to comply and attempted to make a break for it. The suspect then admitted to opening fire, fatally shooting him.
ZimLive summarised the chilling moment:
“He fatally shot Constable Courage Muchechesi who had nothing to do with the case.”
The brutal murder that started the investigation
The Sanyati station killing is tied to the earlier murder of businessman Joseph Mutangadura on 17 August 2025. Armed robbers stormed his Lisheen Estate home in Ruwa, overpowered a security guard and forced entry into the bedroom where he was with his wife.
The gang then shot Mutangadura in the stomach before ransacking his house. The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and valuables.
Mutangadura, 67, was pronounced dead on arrival at Eden Hospital in Windsor, Ruwa. His wife survived with injuries.
Previous arrests in the murder case
Before the police station shooting, two suspects had already been taken into custody. On 3 October 2025, detectives arrested Phillip Mutasa, 38, in Mkoba 6, Gweru. He allegedly confessed to his role and implicated seven accomplices.
On 13 October 2025, police arrested a second suspect, Given Mandizadza, 34, in Harare. During that operation, officers recovered firearms, ammunition and explosives from his vehicle. Commissioner Nyathi confirmed the seizure of two pistols, cartridges, fuses and explosives.
Five more suspects remain at large. Police say investigations are continuing.
