Missing ZimParks AK Rifle Turns Up In Zambezi River During Police Operation
An AK rifle belonging to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has been recovered from the Zambezi River in the Kanyemba area, along with a magazine containing 20 rounds. The recovery was carried out by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Subaqua Unit on 20 September 2026.
AK Rifle Recovered During Zambezi River Operation
The ZRP said the firearm was lost during routine anti-poaching patrols conducted along the Zambezi River.
In a statement shared on X on 22 September, the police said:
“On 20 September 2026, members of the ZRP Subaqua Unit recovered an AK rifle with a magazine loaded with 20 rounds in the Zambezi River, Kanyemba area.”
The firearm was identified as belonging to ZimParks.
The police did not provide further details about how the rifle ended up in the river or the circumstances surrounding its loss.
ZRP Issues Underwater Recovery Appeal
The recovery also highlighted the ZRP Subaqua Unit’s role in underwater operations.
The police urged members of the public and other organisations requiring underwater rescue or recovery services to use the specialised unit.
The ZRP said:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to engage the Police Subaqua Unit for all underwater rescue and recovery operations.”
The recovery comes as authorities continue anti-poaching operations in areas along the Zambezi River, where wildlife protection teams conduct patrols.
What Happened To The Rifle?
The ZRP has confirmed that the weapon belonged to ZimParks and was lost during an anti-poaching patrol, but has not disclosed additional details.
The firearm and ammunition have now been recovered by police divers.
