ZRP Takes Action Against Police Officers Filmed Assaulting Motorist in Budiriro

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has taken disciplinary action against three officers who were caught on camera assaulting a motorist in Budiriro, Harare.

A video of the disturbing incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the officers dragging and kicking the man while a female officer repeatedly slaps him, even though he appears not to be resisting arrest.

Police Condemn Officers’ Conduct

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 29 October, the ZRP condemned the officers’ behaviour, saying it was inconsistent with police conduct and ethics.

“The ZRP has taken note of the Budiriro traffic enforcement viral social media incident. The Police command does not condone such conduct by police officers and has since taken appropriate action on the three police officers with immediate effect,” the statement reads.

However, the ZRP did not disclose the identities of the officers or specify the disciplinary measures taken against them.

Call for Professionalism and Respect During Arrests

While condemning the officers’ actions, the police also urged motorists to remain law-abiding and to avoid using obscene or abusive language toward law enforcement officers, particularly female officers, during arrests.

“Meanwhile, the Police urges motorists to be law-abiding citizens and avoid using obscene or vulgar words to police officers, especially women, on effecting arrests,” the statement added.
