25 Zimbabweans Intercepted at Beitbridge Border as BMA Intensifies Drone Surveillance
The Border Management Authority (BMA) has intercepted 25 Zimbabwean nationals who were attempting to enter South Africa illegally through bushy terrain near the Beitbridge border post.
The interception took place on Monday, 5 January 2026, as authorities intensified border security operations during the busy post-festive travel period.

Advanced Surveillance Deployed in High-Risk Zones
The group was detected using advanced drone surveillance while attempting to bypass official immigration channels through dense bushveld surrounding the port of entry.
Senior BMA officials confirmed that the use of aerial technology has become a key tool in monitoring high-risk areas commonly used for unlawful crossings.
The operation was led by BMA Commissioner and Beitbridge Port Commander Ntakuseni Lambani, who oversaw tactical ground patrols alongside specialised teams deployed to vulnerable sections of the border.
Crackdown Amid Post-Festive Travel Surge
Authorities said the interception forms part of a broader crackdown on irregular migration, particularly during the peak travel period following the festive season. The BMA has increased visibility along the border to deter illegal crossings and criminal activity.
“These measures are aimed at safeguarding South Africa’s borders and ensuring that all travellers enter the country through lawful ports of entry,” officials said.
Heightened Security to Continue
The BMA has indicated that high-visibility patrols and drone surveillance will remain in place as travel volumes stay elevated into early January.
Officials warned that those attempting to cross the border illegally risk arrest and prosecution.
