3,000 Apply For 20 Places At First Lady’s New Nursing School Opening 4 May
More than 3,000 people applied. Only 20 will be picked. The Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa School of Nursing opens on 4 May, and the final selection is happening now. Officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, police officers, and hospital staff are all on the panel. The goal is to cut thousands of hopefuls down to just two dozen names.
‘Everything Needed Is Now In Place’
Tutor-in-charge Ms Lusica Shumba confirmed the school is ready, even if the classroom space vastly outweighs the number of students admitted.
“Everything needed to ensure proper discharge of education to the students in the first intake of the school is now in place,” she said.
“We have started the selection of the students today by opening at least six boxes full of applications. We have to whittle down the figure to 20 students observing the spirit of devolution.”
The sealed boxes of application letters from across Zimbabwe were opened on 15 April 2026. The school has three classrooms, a library, and a theatre with state-of-the-art equipment – all for just 20 students.
‘In Honour Of The First Lady’
School director Jimayi Muduvuri told the selection team to keep the process above board, but he did not hide who the project celebrates.
“This is a project in honour of the First Lady and everything should be done above board,” Mr Muduvuri said.
“In the spirit of Devolution and not leaving anyone or place behind, we want the selectors to select people from all provinces.”
Mr Muduvuri, who has undergone several operations, said his own health battles pushed him to invest in the country’s medical system.
He has already set up health centres in every province, including the Robert Gabriel Mugabe Clinic in Zvimba and the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Clinic in Gwanda.
‘Overwhelming Response’ Prompts Expansion Plan
The nursing school is only allowed to take 20 students per intake for now. But Mr Muduvuri is already asking for more.
“For a start, we have been allowed to enroll 20 students, but owing to the overwhelming response, which will attribute to association of the First Lady, we need to absorb students,” he said.
“On our part, we have been tasked to increase boarding facilities for the students, which we are currently doing.”
Engagements are now underway with the regulator and the Ministry of Health to raise the intake to around 100 students per class. That would still leave more than 2,900 of the original applicants on the outside.
