Zimbabwe Parliament Considers Five O-Level Passes For Professional Driving Licences
Five O-Level passes, including English and Mathematics, could become required to obtain a professional driver’s licence in Zimbabwe if a petition currently before Parliament progresses.
The proposal was brought before Parliament on Thursday, 20 August 2026, and has been referred to the Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development for further consideration.
NewZimbabwe reported the development on its X account, asking whether the proposed academic requirement could improve professionalism and road safety or create additional barriers for drivers.
Parliament Reviews 5 O-Level Driving Proposal
The petition seeks to make five O-Level passes, including English and Mathematics, a condition for obtaining a professional driving licence. The proposal is still being considered and has not become a new licensing requirement.

The matter has now been sent to the relevant parliamentary committee for further consideration.
What The 5 O-Level Proposal Means For Drivers
For now, drivers do not need to change their qualifications because of the petition.
The Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development will consider the proposal before any legislative or regulatory changes are made.
The petition could ultimately lead to further debate about education, professional driving standards and road safety in Zimbabwe.
