Harare Vendors In Court After Alleged Attack On Municipal Police
Nine Harare vendors have appeared in court after prosecutors accused them of resisting municipal police during the ongoing Operation Chenesai Guta campaign.
The vendors were arrested following an incident in central Harare on 26 September 2026, when municipal police moved in as part of efforts to clear pavements and relocate traders to designated areas.
Vendors Accused Of Resisting Municipal Police
The accused are Regis Karavhina, Mduduzi Ndhlovu, Blessed Chinhema, Tinotenda Muhlupeki, Smart Mafuku, Tatenda Pfuwai, John Mahlangu, Tsungirirai Sanito and Ezra Besamu.
According to the ZimLive report, prosecutors told the court that about 80 municipal police officers arrived at First Street and Speke Avenue in three trucks.
The State alleged that some vendors encouraged others to resist the operation before stones were thrown.
“One of the stones struck the fender of a Nissan Almera belonging to POTRAZ, causing US$200 damage.”
At the current exchange rate of about R16.39 to US$1, the alleged damage is approximately R3,278.
What Happened After The Alleged Clash
Three of the accused were arrested at the scene, while prosecutors allege the others later regrouped and marched towards Town House.
Police were subsequently called and the remaining suspects were arrested.
The nine appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai and were remanded in custody for a bail hearing scheduled for 30 September 2026.
The case remains before the Harare Magistrates Court.
The court proceedings come as Operation Chenesai Guta continues to target street vending in Harare, with authorities seeking to move traders from pavements into designated trading areas.
