Southerton Dog Attack: Car Dealer Arrested Days After Passerby’s Death
A Harare car dealer has been arrested nearly a week after four dogs fatally attacked a passerby in Southerton. Gilbert Rumbwere, 44, was arrested on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, in connection with the death of 39-year-old Malcom Takudzwa Muzavazi.
Southerton Dog Attack Leads To Arrest
Muzavazi was attacked on 24 September between 6pm and 6.30pm along a footpath between the ZESA Holdings durawall and a car sale.
The dogs were reportedly under the care of a private security guard when they were released from their kennels for feeding.
Police previously arrested security guard Mannex Svova, 21, and car sale co-owner Itai Tamirepi, 43, as investigations continued.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Rumbwere’s arrest and reiterated the need for dog owners and handlers to keep animals properly secured.
“All dog owners should exercise responsibility and ensure that their dogs are properly secured and controlled at all times to prevent attacks on members of the public.”
Police Warn Dog Owners
Nyathi said dogs should not be allowed to roam public areas without supervision or proper restraint.
He also urged members of the public to report stray or aggressive dogs to authorities, the SPCA or the nearest police station.
The investigation into Muzavazi’s death remains ongoing. The arrests do not by themselves establish criminal guilt.
The latest development follows the initial police confirmation of the fatal Southerton attack on 25 September 2026.
