Mukanya Is Back: Thomas Mapfumo Returns For Chivayo’s Mega Deal
Chimurenga music legend Thomas Mapfumo has returned to Zimbabwe after nearly a decade in the United States, with his homecoming coming ahead of 2 private performances reportedly worth a combined US$1 million (about R16.39 million).
Mapfumo touched down at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, ahead of engagements linked to businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
Thomas Mapfumo Touches Down In Harare
The veteran musician was welcomed back by government officials, including Youth Minister Tinoda Machakaire.
His return comes after Chivayo pledged US$500,000 (about R8.20 million) for each of 2 performances.
One of the performances is expected to be at musician Jah Prayzah’s wedding, while the second is linked to Chivayo’s birthday and housewarming celebrations later this year.
Mapfumo previously confirmed that he had accepted the offer, making it clear that his return was work-related.
“Ndati ndikuudzei kuti ndirikuuya, ndezvebasa izvi (I just wanted to let you know that I am coming. It is work).”
Mukanya’s US$1 Million Deal
According to NewZimbabwe, Mapfumo’s return follows the arrangement announced earlier this year, with the 2 performances carrying a combined US$1 million (about R16.39 million) price tag.
The deal has placed the veteran musician’s long-awaited return at the centre of Zimbabwe’s entertainment news.
His arrival also comes as preparations continue for the private events where he is expected to perform.
Mapfumo Back Home After Years Away
Mapfumo’s return marks a notable homecoming for one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised musical figures.
The focus now shifts to his performances, with Jah Prayzah’s wedding and Chivayo’s celebrations expected to provide the stages for his first major engagements back in Zimbabwe.
