Mufakose Man Jailed 20 Years For Killing Friend Over Sadza Dispute

A Mufakose man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his friend and colleague, Michael Salimon.

The High Court in Harare handed down the sentence after finding Byson Mwachande (31) guilty of the fatal attack at the Lyton Flyover on 13 February 2025.

Altercation Escalates Over USD20 and Sadza

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the argument began when Mwachande became enraged after seeing Salimon share a plate of sadza with another colleague. He demanded repayment for the meal Salimon had eaten at his home earlier that morning and insisted on taking Salimon’s USD20 share of the day’s earnings as compensation.

When the colleague refused to hand over the money, Mwachande became violent, forcing both men to flee toward the Workington industrial area.

Attack Leads to Instant Death

Mwachande pursued the two men in a pickup truck, jumped from the moving vehicle, and struck Salimon once on the forehead with a 470-gram stone. Salimon collapsed onto the tarmac and died instantly. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as severe head injury, including a skull fracture and subdural haemorrhage.

Offender Surrenders

Following the attack, Mwachande fled the scene but later surrendered to police on 15 February 2025.

The court found him guilty of murder and handed down a 20-year prison sentence.

A Tragic Reminder

Legal experts and community leaders have emphasised that violence is never a solution to disputes.

This tragic loss highlights how a minor disagreement, when fueled by anger, can have devastating and irreversible consequences.
