Wicknell Chivayo Gifts US$300,000 and Luxury Team Bus to Highlanders FC After Benjani Mwaruwari’s Appointment

Businessman Wicknell Chivayo has thrown his weight behind Highlanders Football Club following the appointment of former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach ahead of the 2026 Premier Soccer League season.

In a statement shared on his X account, Chivayo hailed the decision as a major step forward for the Bulawayo giants, saying the club had made the right choice by entrusting its future to one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished football figures.

Praise for Local Expertise

Chivayo said Mwaruwari’s vast playing experience, both locally and abroad, made him well suited for the Bosso job. He highlighted the former Manchester City striker’s exposure to elite football in South Africa and Europe, arguing that it was time local clubs relied more on home-grown expertise.

He added that Highlanders’ recent struggles on the pitch made the appointment timely, expressing confidence that Benjani’s pedigree and understanding of the game would help restore the club’s competitiveness.

US$300,000 Injection for Bosso

To mark the milestone, Chivayo announced an immediate financial injection of US$300,000 to Highlanders, which he said would be channelled through club curator Jabulani Nkomo. The funds are expected to go towards the new coach’s contract, clearing outstanding player arrears and strengthening the squad through new signings.

Chivayo also revealed that Mwaruwari would be provided with a vehicle of his choice, in line with his contract, as part of the support package.

New Executive Bus for the Team

In addition to the cash boost, Chivayo disclosed that he had purchased a brand-new 75-seater Higer executive bus, valued at about US$285,000, for the club. The bus is fitted with modern amenities, including a toilet and reclining seats, and is intended to improve the team’s comfort when travelling for away matches.

He said the gesture was aimed at boosting morale among players, technical staff and management, while also improving the club’s overall professionalism.

No Takeover Intentions, Says Chivayo

Wicknell Chivayo was quick to dismiss any speculation that his financial backing signalled an intention to take control of Highlanders. He stressed that his involvement was purely supportive and rooted in a personal commitment to his late uncle, former Vice President John Landa Nkomo, a lifelong Bosso supporter.

He reiterated that his role would remain that of a benefactor, motivated by a desire to support Zimbabwean sport and empower young athletes, not to interfere in the club’s administration.
