Armed Robbers Vanish with US$12 000 After Robbing Energy Park Service Station

Two armed men escaped with more than US$12 000 in cash and several mobile phones after robbing Energy Park Service Station in Macheke.

The suspects fled the scene in a company Toyota Aqua later found abandoned in Marondera, prompting police in Mashonaland East Province to launch a manhunt.

How the Robbery Unfolded

The robbery occurred during a routine cash collection exercise involving three Energy Park service stations.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident happened on January 21, 2026, when Energy Park employee Tafadzwa Asado set out to collect daily takings for banking in Harare.

Asado first collected US$5 946 from the Murambinda service station at around 6am before proceeding to Nyazura, where he picked up a further US$2 775. The money was placed in a bag and stored in the boot of a Toyota Aqua he was using for the trip.

Trouble struck when Asado arrived at Energy Park Macheke at approximately 10am to collect the final amount.

Armed Suspects Storm Office

According to Commissioner Nyathi, Asado had just entered the site office where employees Costa Mambara and Godfrey Pfute were preparing to hand over US$3 097 when an armed suspect stormed in.

The suspect, who was armed with an unknown pistol, ordered the three employees to lie on the ground,” Nyathi said.

The robber seized the cash on the table, demanded their cellphones, and took an additional US$64 from one of the workers before forcing Asado to surrender the office and vehicle keys.

Second Attacker Targets Fuel Attendant

As the office robbery unfolded, a second armed suspect confronted a fuel attendant outside the station, pointing a firearm at her and forcing a customer to flee, leaving behind a jerry can.

The attendant handed over US$120 before being force-marched into the office and ordered to lie down. The suspects attempted to lock the office door but failed.

Getaway and Vehicle Recovery

The two armed men then drove off in Asado’s Toyota Aqua along the Harare–Mutare Road. Minutes later, a motorcyclist arrived at the service station and discovered the shaken employees, who reported the robbery.

Police in Macheke immediately alerted their counterparts in Marondera, leading to a search along the highway. The getaway vehicle was later found abandoned in Marondera, but the suspects had already disappeared.

Investigations Ongoing

Police say investigations are continuing, and efforts are underway to identify and locate the suspects. Authorities have urged anyone with information that may assist investigations to report to the nearest police station.
