Orlando Pirates Midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula Eyes League Title Glory Before Considering Retirement
Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has made it clear that retirement is not yet on his mind, insisting he wants to win a league title before considering stepping away from professional football.
Speaking at the club’s press conference at Rand Stadium, the 36-year-old said league success remains the one major achievement missing from an otherwise decorated career.

Dream of League Glory
When asked about retirement, Makhaula said the decision would only come after achieving league success. He admitted the dream of lifting the league trophy continues to drive him and remains a personal ambition.
The Randfontein-born midfielder said winning the league would be a career-defining moment and something he would proudly share with his children.
“Only God knows. I’m always praying because my wish is the league. We will see maybe this season it can happen but hopefully,” he said.
Only Medal Missing at Pirates
Since joining Orlando Pirates, the former AmaZulu FC midfielder has lifted several domestic trophies, including the MTN8, Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout and Carling Black Label Cup. However, the league title remains the only major honour missing from his cabinet.
Makhaula believes playing for a big club comes with expectations, adding that top teams are constantly competing for silverware — a challenge he embraces as he continues his pursuit of league glory.
Young Teammates Keep Veteran Going
Makhaula credited the youthful energy within the Pirates squad for pushing him to maintain high standards both in training and on matchday. He said the intensity and pace of younger players constantly challenge him to raise his game.
The experienced midfielder added that while the youngsters test his limits physically, his football intelligence and experience allow him to remain competitive at the highest level.
Experience Meets Hunger
Makhaula said staying fit and disciplined off the pitch has been key to keeping up with his teammates, noting that the relationship between senior and junior players is mutually beneficial.
He explained that while the younger players push him with their energy, he in turn passes on lessons gained over years in top-flight football, creating a healthy balance within the squad.
