Harare Restaurant Under Investigation Over Alleged Sale of Pet Food to Customers

A popular social spot in central Harare is under investigation following allegations that it may have been serving pet food to unsuspecting customers.

City of Harare health authorities have confirmed that inspectors will move in to assess the situation, with the establishment facing possible closure if violations of food safety regulations are confirmed.

City Authorities Move In

Director of Health Services Dr Prosper Chonzi said the municipality would urgently dispatch health inspectors to the premises to determine the validity of the claims.

He indicated that authorities would either compel the business to rectify any breaches or shut it down altogether if it is found to be operating outside the law.

The establishment, which runs a restaurant and bar on the ground floor as well as an upstairs bar, has come under intense scrutiny amid allegations that it has been selling pet food to human consumers.

Public Health Fears Raised

Dr Chonzi described the allegations as alarming and unacceptable, warning that such practices could pose significant health risks.

He stressed that all food outlets are governed by the Food and Food Standards Act and are required to comply with strict hygiene and safety regulations at all times.

Health officials are particularly concerned given Harare’s susceptibility to outbreaks of communicable diseases such as typhoid and cholera, especially in the city centre where food outlets serve large numbers of people daily.

Broader Compliance Checks Expected

The investigation will not only focus on the type of food allegedly being served but will also examine overall hygiene standards and food handling practices at the premises.

Dr Chonzi said he had instructed his officers to begin inspections before the end of the week as part of wider efforts to strengthen public health enforcement.
