Zengeza Landlord on the Run After Tenant Dies Over Missing Rent
A Zengeza landlord is on the run after allegedly teaming up with four others to fatally assault his tenant over rental money.
Crispen Marara is wanted by police in connection with the death of 38-year-old Tendai Nenguwo, who died on Sunday at Chitungwiza Central Hospital following a brutal beating.
According to H-Metro, the incident stems from a dispute over US$560 that Tendai had allegedly collected from other tenants at a house along Hanga Street in Zengeza 1 — property owned by Marara’s parents. Tendai reportedly converted the money to his own use, sparking outrage.
“Police are investigating a murder case in Zengeza,” said Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza. “The deceased was reported to have used the money of the accused person. The deceased passed on while admitted at Chitungwiza Central Hospital on April 13.”
It is alleged that Marara hired four unidentified men who assisted him in severely assaulting Tendai using broomsticks and fists. After the attack, Tendai was hospitalised, where he complained of persistent chest pains until he succumbed to his injuries.
Tendai’s sister, Yvette Masango, confirmed the family’s grief and the burial arrangements.
“We lost a loving brother,” said Yvette. “After the assault, he was always complaining of chest pains. He told me that he was reluctant to lodge a report with the police since he was the one at fault. He was evicted from the house over unpaid rentals.”
Tendai is survived by two children, with the eldest currently in Grade 7. The family plans to bury him in Chihota village.
Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of Crispen Marara and his accomplices.
