Zimbabwean Lawyer Expelled From Kenya For Allegedly Funding Anti-Government Protests

Zimbabwean constitutional lawyer Brian Bright Kagoro has been dramatically expelled from Kenya after security chiefs accused him of bankrolling a shadowy plot to reignite anti-government protests.

The 51-year-old legal eagle was pounced upon by immigration officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Sunday evening, February 22, 2026. After hours of gruelling interrogation, he was declared “persona non grata” and unceremoniously bundled onto the next flight out of the country.

Million-Dollar Man Accused Of Trying To Spark Chaos

According to Capital FM, the dramatic expulsion follows a painstaking six-month deep-dive by Kenyan intelligence agencies. They claim Kagoro wasn’t just visiting Nairobi for the sunshine but was the linchpin in a foreign-funded operation designed to exploit economic frustrations and bring the government to its knees.

Security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, have painted a picture of a calculated campaign. They allege that during several trips to Nairobi throughout 2025, Kagoro held covert meetings with local activists.

The explosive claim? He reportedly committed to raising a staggering Sh150 million (US$1.2 million / approximately R22 million) to bankroll a new wave of protests.

“We have evidence, gathered painstakingly over the last six months, establishing a deliberate strategy to manufacture civil unrest,” a senior security official told Capital FM.

Authorities allege the cash was meant to breathe new life into the youth-led demonstrations that rocked Kenya in 2024. Those protests, largely coordinated on social media, forced the government into a humiliating U-turn on proposed tax hikes and exposed deep public anger over the soaring cost of living.

Lawyer’s Denial And Donor Links

But Kagoro didn’t go quietly. During his interrogation, he reportedly hit back at the accusations, insisting his visit was strictly personal and professional.

He stated he was in the country for a family function and to participate in a conference on critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

While he did admit to knowing Kenyan civil society players, he flatly denied being a puppet master pulling the strings of protest movements.

“He acknowledged interacting with Kenyan civil society actors but denied raising funds for political activity or coordinating unrest,” officials recounted.

Investigators, however, remain deeply suspicious. The Eastleigh Voice reports that security agencies are scrutinising his attendance at other events, including a judiciary accountability forum, viewing them as prime opportunities to network with activists.

They also pointed to his long-standing links with the Open Society Foundations, the international philanthropy funded by billionaire George Soros. This organisation has long been in the crosshairs of Kenyan politicians who accuse foreign donors of meddling in local politics.

Kagoro, a co-founder of the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, has been a familiar face in Nairobi for nearly two decades, working within regional governance networks. His supporters hail him as a strategist, but authorities now view him as a threat to national stability.

Officials have fired a warning shot, declaring that any foreign national suspected of political interference will be barred entry or kicked out.

The lawyer has yet to make a public statement since his dramatic exit.
