Sikandar Raza Wins Player of the Match Despite Zimbabwe’s Loss to South Africa
Sikandar Raza produced a stirring all-round display to close out Zimbabwe’s campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, earning the Aramco Player of the Match award despite his side’s defeat to South Africa in the Super Eight stage.
The Zimbabwe Chevrons captain underlined why he remains the top-ranked T20I all-rounder, leading from the front in what turned out to be his team’s final match of the tournament.

Fighting Knock Under Pressure
Zimbabwe were already wobbling at 28 for 2 when Raza walked to the crease in the fifth over against a fired-up South African pace attack. With only the West Indies having dismantled Zimbabwe’s top order quicker earlier in the competition, the pressure was immense.
Raza survived an early scare against express quick Anrich Nortje before shifting gears. The harder the Proteas bowlers charged in, the more aggressively he countered, dispatching deliveries with authority in a fearless counterattack.
He went on to score nearly half of Zimbabwe’s total, anchoring the innings at a time when collapse seemed imminent.
Early Strikes With the Ball
Raza’s impact was not limited to the bat. Opening the bowling, he struck crucial blows by removing both South African openers and later dismissing Dewald Brevis, who had looked set to steer his side comfortably home.
Those breakthroughs briefly tilted momentum Zimbabwe’s way and ensured the contest remained competitive, even as South Africa ultimately secured victory by five wickets.
“Saved His Best for Last”
Throughout the tournament, Raza had spoken about accountability and the team’s desire to correct past shortcomings. His performance against South Africa reflected that mindset — a captain determined to lead by example.
Head coach Justin Sammons summed it up succinctly, saying Raza had “saved his best for last.”
Although Zimbabwe’s Super Eight journey ended in defeat, Raza’s all-round heroics ensured the team signed off with pride — and with renewed respect on the global stage.
