Chop my money: Zimbabwe Chevrons pockets big from ICC T20 World Cup

The Chevrons’ fairy-tale at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has delivered more than pride for Zimbabwe. It has also opened a serious cash tap. Their performances have turned a once modest campaign into a headline financial story across world cricket. Fans now ask, quite reasonably, how much this spirited run is actually worth.

ICC prize money adds up fast

Under the tournament payout structure, Super 8 sides receive a guaranteed US$382,500 from the ICC prize pool. On top of that, every group or Super 8 victory earns a neat US$31,154 performance bonus. Zimbabwe won three matches before bowing out, including famous scalps against Australia and Sri Lanka. Those victories add roughly US$93,462 in bonuses, taking their confirmed ICC earnings to about US$475,962. For a team that missed the 2024 edition, that figure already feels transformational at home.

Chivayo’s million-dollar promise

The windfall does not end with official prize money, however. Flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo has pledged a cool US$1 million to the Chevrons. He says the money rewards their qualification for the Super Eights and their fearless performances.

The pledge, though, still needs approval from his oft-mentioned “principal”, President Emmerson Mnangagwa. If rubber-stamped, Chivayo’s gift would more than double the players’ World Cup takings. Suddenly, a once-overlooked team stands to clear well over US$1.4 million from this campaign. For many squad members, that potential bonus eclipses several years of domestic earnings combined.

Windfall beyond the boundary

The money will not erase Zimbabwe’s narrow Super 8 defeats, yet it changes the mood around the side. Extra funds can strengthen central contracts, improve player welfare, and support junior pathways. Sponsors are already circling a group that beat giants and charmed neutrals across India and Sri Lanka.

Moreover, the players now carry proof that winning cricket pays, even without lifting the trophy. For Sikandar Raza and his teammates, the figures matter less than the belief they have rekindled. But as the calculators click in Harare, one thing is clear. The Chevrons’ brave run has become a financial masterstroke as well as a sporting statement.
