Armed robbers struck a Mukuru retail outlet in Bulawayo, making off with more than US$70,000 and R500,000.
Officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police responded to the scene, and investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.
Authorities have yet to recover any of the stolen funds, and the incident has sparked concerns over the security of commercial outlets in the city.
Church in Westgate Targeted in Violent Heist
In a separate incident, four armed robbers targeted Celebration Church, stealing US$500 and two HP laptops. The assailants were armed with a pistol and a rifle.
During the raid, they overpowered two security guards, tying their hands and legs with wires and electrical cables before locking them in the guard room. The guards were also assaulted with a knobkerrie, sustaining minor injuries.
Robbers Break Into Church Offices
After subduing the guards, the robbers forced entry into the church office using an unidentified tool. There, they broke into a steel cabinet and retrieved a cash safe containing US$500 and the laptops. The assailants also searched the guards, taking US$30 and two Itel cellphones.
The security personnel were freed later by a Safeguard driver who arrived at the premises.
Police Appeal for Vigilance
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident and urged church members to remain vigilant.
“Police are investigating an armed robbery case at church premises in Westgate. The total value stolen is US$620, and nothing has been recovered as of yet. A live round was found in the guard room where the security guards were bound,” said Insp. Chakanza.
Both security guards are reported to be in stable condition. Authorities continue to follow leads in both the Bulawayo and Harare incidents.
