CAF Doubles Confederation Cup Prize as Champions League Winner Gets US$6 Million

African football clubs are set to benefit from significantly larger financial rewards after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a major increase in prize money for its flagship club competitions.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed that the adjustments will take effect from the 2025/26 season, with both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup seeing notable increases in payouts.

The move is expected to strengthen the financial standing of clubs across the continent while boosting the competitiveness of CAF tournaments.

Champions League Winners to Receive US$6 Million

Under the new structure, the winners of the CAF Champions League will take home US$6 million.

The revised figure represents a 50 percent increase from the previous prize of US$4 million, further raising the stakes in Africa’s premier club football tournament.

The increase continues a trend that has seen the prize pool expand significantly since Motsepe assumed leadership of CAF.

Confederation Cup Prize Doubles

The CAF Confederation Cup will experience an even larger jump in rewards.

Starting from the 2025/26 campaign, the tournament winner will receive US$4 million — double the previous US$2 million prize.

The adjustment signals CAF’s intention to place greater value on its secondary continental competition and provide more financial incentives for participating clubs.

Prize Money Growth Under Motsepe

Since taking office, Motsepe has overseen major increases in financial rewards for African club football.

When he became CAF president, the Champions League winner earned US$2.5 million. The new US$6 million payout represents a rise of about 140 percent during his tenure.

The Confederation Cup has also experienced rapid growth, with the winner’s prize climbing from US$1.25 million to US$4 million — a surge of roughly 220 percent.

Increased Investment in African Football

CAF said the enhanced payouts will push the total prize money and solidarity payments distributed to clubs to more than US$42 million each season.

This marks a 114 percent increase compared with the levels recorded when Motsepe first assumed office. In 2021, the organisation allocated a total of just US$18.8 million in prize money.

Officials say the increased funding aims to reward performance while encouraging clubs to invest more heavily in infrastructure, player development and competition.

The changes are also expected to elevate the quality and competitiveness of African club football as the continent’s game continues to evolve financially and structurally.
