Nyakane and De Jager Confront Tough Recoveries
Trevor Nyakane continues his recovery from a major injury. The veteran prop ruptured his Achilles tendon in February 2025.
He hopes to return to action later this year. However, he will be 38 when the 2027 Rugby World Cup begins.
Meanwhile, younger props have moved ahead in the national pecking order. Ox Nche, Wilco Louw, Thomas du Toit, and Jan-Hendrik Wessels compete strongly.
Gerhard Steenekamp and Boan Venter also challenge for selection.
Lood de Jager also faces another frustrating injury setback. His injury troubles started with pericarditis before the 2023 Rugby World Cup. That heart condition ruled him out of the tournament.
He returned in 2024 but later suffered a shoulder injury. Now doctors plan hip surgery after his latest setback.
Meanwhile, Ruan Nortje continues to impress in the lock position. Additionally, RG Snyman’s power and versatility strengthen the competition.
De Klerk Faces Injury and Selection Pressure
Faf de Klerk now deals with another serious injury challenge. The experienced scrumhalf recently suffered a major ankle injury.
As a result, he will miss most of the domestic season. His Japanese club also deregistered him during recovery.
However, selection pressure already existed before the injury. Cobus Reinach, Grant Williams, and Morne van den Berg moved ahead.
Therefore, De Klerk faces a difficult path back into the squad.
These injuries also raise broader questions about the trio’s future. Age and strong competition now threaten their international careers.
Nevertheless, all three players served South African rugby with pride. Their contributions remain important in Springbok history.
