Man Fakes Armed Robbery After Failing to Raise Lobola Money
A 26-year-old Bulawayo man has been fined after fabricating an armed robbery story in a desperate attempt to cover up his failure to raise lobola money.
Delight Ncube appeared before Themba Chimiso facing charges of supplying false information to the police. He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Promise He Couldn’t Keep
According to court proceedings, Ncube had assured his girlfriend and her family that he would bring US$6,000 for lobola. Preparations were reportedly made in anticipation of the payment ceremony.
However, the promised day came and went without his arrival. Instead, around midday, Ncube contacted the family with a dramatic explanation.
He claimed he had been ambushed by armed robbers while travelling with relatives, alleging that both the cash and a vehicle had been stolen.
Police Detect Inconsistencies
Ncube went on to file a report at Khumalo Police Station, prompting an investigation. Detectives, including members of the Vehicle Theft Squad, quickly identified gaps in his account.
Further questioning exposed contradictions, eventually leading to his confession. Ncube admitted that the robbery had been staged to avoid disappointing his partner and her family.
“I Didn’t Want to Lose Her”
In mitigation, Ncube told the court he acted out of desperation, citing financial constraints and emotional pressure.
He said he earned only US$250 and could not meet the demanded amount, adding that he feared losing his partner if he failed to pay.
Court Slams Misuse of Police Resources
Prosecutor Samuel Mpofu told the court that Ncube’s actions had unnecessarily diverted police time and resources.
Magistrate Chimiso convicted him and imposed a US$100 fine, which must be paid by March 31. Failure to settle the fine will result in a four-month prison sentence.
Authorities noted that the false report triggered avoidable investigations before the truth eventually emerged.
