Parirenyatwa Nurses Protest, Demand a Salary Review Amid Rising Fuel and Transport Costs

Nurses at Parirenyatwa Hospital staged a demonstration at the hospital, demanding an urgent review of their salaries as the cost of living continues to rise.

The protest comes as many healthcare workers say they are struggling to cope with the sharp increase in fuel prices, which has driven up both transport and food expenses.

Rising Costs Spark Frustration

The nurses say their current earnings are no longer sufficient to meet basic needs, with some describing their wages as inadequate in the face of ongoing economic pressures.

According to ZimLive, transport has become a major concern, with workers receiving a ZiG500 allowance — roughly US$15 — yet some now reportedly spend as much as US$6 per day just to commute to and from work.

Strike Escalates With Fresh Demands

According to ZiFM Stereo, tensions escalated as nurses handed a list of demands to the Health Services Commission, outlining several areas they say require urgent attention.

Among the key issues raised are improved salaries, increased transport allowances, and better housing support. The nurses also expressed dissatisfaction with transport arrangements provided through PSC buses, arguing that they do not align with their working shifts.

Calls were also made for free medical care at public institutions, with nurses saying they can no longer afford treatment themselves. In addition, concerns were raised over uniforms, with workers saying worn-out attire reflects deeper systemic challenges within the healthcare sector.

Pressure Mounts Across Hospitals

The demonstration follows a similar protest held just days earlier at Sally Mugabe Hospital, where nurses also called for salary adjustments in line with the rising cost of living.

The back-to-back protests highlight growing unrest within the public health sector, as workers push for improved conditions.
