‘Less Instagram, More Training’: Benni McCarthy Urges Young Football Players
Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has raised concerns about the mindset of today’s footballers, saying the current generation lacks the passion and discipline that defined players of his era.
Speaking in a recent interview, the former striker reflected on how priorities in football have shifted, with many players now drawn to off-field distractions.

In an interview with iDiski Times, McCarthy said players from his generation were driven by ambition rather than fame.
He explained that their focus was on improving, winning trophies and earning moves to top clubs, rather than seeking attention away from the pitch.
“Our generation loved football more than being on the front page.
We wanted to succeed, to play for the best teams in South Africa and eventually go to Europe. There’s just too much showboating. Players are more interested in social media platforms about how good they look in the kit rather than what it takes to help you win things,” Benni McCarthy said.
Social Media a Growing Distraction
McCarthy believes today’s players, while more naturally gifted, are often sidetracked by social media and the desire for visibility.
He noted that some players appear more focused on their online image than their performances, warning that such distractions can take away from the hard work needed to succeed.
“Today, you often see players focusing on their phones. I don’t want to be highly critical of players, but I think they need to seriously start to put football first more because the limelight, everything that you have, everything that’s coming to you is because of football.”
Call for Greater Commitment
Despite acknowledging the talent in modern football, McCarthy stressed that dedication remains the key to success.
He urged players to prioritise training, work harder and show greater respect for the game, reminding them that everything they achieve comes through football.
“So, you need to respect that a little bit more and dedicate yourself to your craft. Train better, work harder, less time on Instagram and TikTok or create emojis, videos and all that.
But dedicate a little bit more to training, improving and becoming better,” he added.
According to McCarthy, reducing time spent on social media and increasing commitment on the training ground could make all the difference in shaping the next generation of football stars.
