ZRP Sets Up 24 Hour Social Media Monitoring Team To Fight Crime

ZRP Reveals It Has Dedicated Team Monitoring All Social Media Platforms 24/7

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has revealed that it has established a dedicated team operating 24 hours a day to monitor all social media platforms as authorities increasingly rely on digital platforms for crime detection and public engagement.

National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, made the disclosure during the H-Metro Show, where he outlined how the police are strengthening communication channels with members of the public.

Commissioner Nyathi said social media has become a key tool in modern policing, allowing authorities to receive information quickly and respond to incidents more efficiently.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police also has a team operating 24 hours monitoring social media platforms,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

He explained that members of the public can use various digital platforms to report crime and suspicious activities.

“The police has various reporting mechanisms — WhatsApp, telephone, Facebook, X, website and anonymous reporting,” he said.

The police spokesperson indicated that the approach is meant to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen public participation in crime prevention.

Public Encouraged To Report Crime Through Social Media

Commissioner Nyathi urged members of the public to use social media and other digital platforms to report criminal activity.

He said the availability of multiple communication channels makes it easier for citizens to share information with law enforcement authorities.

“Anyone peddling drugs, trafficking drugs or running drug bases should be reported,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

“If there are police officers involved in criminal activities, let us know.”

He added that the police are encouraging anonymous reporting to protect informants and encourage more people to come forward with information.

Commissioner Nyathi also encouraged members of the public to follow up on reported cases.

“The public should constantly get feedback, engage local police stations, district offices, provincial commands and police headquarters,” he said.

“They should also get case reference numbers.”

Police Warn Against False Reports On Social Media

While encouraging public participation, Commissioner Nyathi warned against the misuse of social media when reporting crime.

He said false reports waste police resources and could result in legal consequences.

“People should be credible. Do not waste police resources,” he said.

“The law is clear. Anyone making a false report will be charged under the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.”

Commissioner Nyathi said the 24-hour social media monitoring initiative forms part of broader efforts to enhance policing and improve response times.

He urged members of the public to continue working with the police by reporting suspicious activities through official platforms.
