Alick Macheso Band Member Barnabas Mandipota Cause Of Death Revealed After Speculation

Orchestra Mberikwazvo Star Barnabas Mandipota Cause Of Death Confirmed

The cause of death of Alick Macheso’s key band member, Barnabas “Barna” Mandipota, has been revealed following suspicion and speculation after the Orchestra Mberikwazvo backing vocalist and drummer was found with a deep wound around his neck.

Family spokesperson and elder brother, Fastmore Mandipota, confirmed that post-mortem results ruled out foul play. The clarification came ahead of burial arrangements announced on 7 April 2026, following Mandipota’s death on Sunday.

According to The Herald, the family moved quickly to address rumours circulating after details about the neck wound emerged.

“The doctors advised us that he developed a boil on the neck, which was left unattended for months, leading to complications,” Fastmore Mandipota said.

“The doctor advised us that the pus-filled bump was now affecting his lungs since it had spread throughout his entire body.”

“We were told that he was having breathing problems which led to his death.”

The family said the medical explanation helped clear speculation that had begun circulating among fans and the music fraternity following news of the musician’s sudden death.

Burial Plans And Family Grief

Earlier reports indicated that Mandipota would be buried in Bikita, Masvingo Province, after funeral arrangements were made by the family. However, another report indicated a burial at Kadoma Hospital Cemetery on Wednesday.

Fastmore Mandipota also revealed that the late musician left behind a young family.

“He is survived by four children, the eldest aged 10 years.”

“Barna’s wife is also pregnant, so you can see the additional challenge we now have as a family.”

“It’s painful to see people die, but there is nothing we can do about it.”

The family said fans and friends had been sending condolences and offering support since the announcement of his death.

“Fans and friends have been showing us true love by commiserating with us since we announced his death.”

Orchestra Mberikwazvo And Arts Industry React

Orchestra Mberikwazvo spokesperson Tich Makahamadze said the band was still struggling to come to terms with Mandipota’s passing.

“Last Thursday he came for our Tanza show, but we excused him since he was unwell with a toothache.”

“We did not travel with him to Mutare because he was receiving treatment in Chitungwiza.”

“Barna even told us that he was responding well to medication, and we thought he would soon rejoin the band.”

“We were all shocked after hearing that Barna was no more, and it is hard to take.”

Makahamadze described Mandipota as professional, punctual and versatile.

“We never had challenges with him; he was a professional who thoroughly enjoyed his job.”

Tributes continued to pour in from musicians, promoters and fans, remembering Mandipota as a rising talent in Zimbabwe’s music industry.
