Zimbabweans React as ZIMURA Board Is Dissolved
Zimbabweans have reacted with mixed feelings following the dissolution of the board of the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA), after Government intervened citing governance concerns.
Authorities moved to disband the board as part of efforts to restore order and accountability within the country’s music rights sector, amid allegations of poor financial transparency and lack of fiduciary responsibility.

Government Steps In
The board, which was chaired by Alexio Gwenzi, was dissolved following concerns over how the organisation was being run, particularly around financial management and accountability to its members.
The intervention is seen as a significant step by authorities to address long-standing concerns raised by stakeholders in the creative industry.
Secretariat Remains Operational
ZIMURA acting director Henry Makombe confirmed the development, saying operations at the organisation will continue despite the leadership changes.
“We continue operating as the Secretariat, awaiting for the Interim Administrator to be appointed by the Ministry and ultimately the establishment of the new board,” he said.
Awaiting New Leadership
The Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs is expected to appoint an interim administrator who will oversee the transition and lay the groundwork for a new board.
This process is anticipated to bring stability and rebuild trust among musicians and other stakeholders who rely on ZIMURA for royalty collection and distribution.
Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
The development has sparked varied reactions from Zimbabweans, particularly within the arts sector, with some welcoming the move as necessary for reform, while others have expressed concern over the future of the organisation.
