Gwanda Kombi Explosion: What We Know So Far As More Details Emerge

More details are emerging following the deadly Gwanda kombi explosion that killed at least 18 people along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road on Thursday, April 16, 2026, with authorities now deploying a bomb squad as investigations intensify.

The explosion occurred between 1PM and 2PM near the Much Binding area, between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate, about 20 kilometres from Bulawayo. Officials are still working to establish what caused the blast.

Kombi Explodes Killing 18 Instantly

Police confirmed that the victims were travelling in a South Africa-registered Toyota Quantum when it suddenly caught fire and exploded.

In a statement released on Thursday, authorities outlined the scale of the tragedy:

“The ZRP reports the death of +/- 18 people when a kombi exploded into fire between Chipangali and Gwanda tollgate along Bulawayo–Beitbridge Road between 1300 hours and 1400 hours today. More details to be released in due course.”

According to ZimLive, the explosion was devastating. The vehicle was completely destroyed, and the force of the blast scattered debris and human remains across nearly 50 metres.

Emergency services, including the police, army, and fire brigade, were quickly deployed to secure the scene and contain flames that had spread to nearby grass.

Bomb Squad Deployment Raises Questions

New developments show that specialised units, including a bomb squad, were sent to the scene — a move that has raised further questions about the nature of the explosion.

ZimLive reported:

“Police are warning motorists to expect delays of up to 4 hours on the Bulawayo-Esigodini road after bomb squad and fire brigade deployed to scene of a Toyota Quantum explosion.”

Authorities have not confirmed whether explosive materials were involved. However, the presence of a bomb disposal unit suggests investigators are treating the scene with caution.

ZimLive also described the scale of destruction:

“Scene of horror incident… where a South Africa-registered Toyota Quantum exploded suddenly leaving vehicle and body parts strewn over nearly 50 metres.”

There are circulating claims that one victim may have been found a considerable distance from the wreckage, indicating the strength of the blast.

At this stage, the cause of the explosion remains unknown.

Traffic Chaos And Ongoing Probe

The incident caused major disruption along one of Zimbabwe’s busiest highways, with motorists facing long delays.

ZimLive warned that delays of up to four hours were expected as emergency teams worked at the scene and investigators combed through debris.

A temporary one-kilometre detour has since been opened to ease congestion.

ZBC News reported that the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, attended the scene as authorities coordinated the response.

Police, the army, and other emergency teams remain on site, gathering evidence and working to determine what triggered the explosion.

Families of the victims are still waiting for formal identification processes to be completed.

More updates are expected as investigations continue into the deadly incident.
