SAMWU workers embark on massive protest action in Johannesburg

Hundreds of Johannesburg public servants affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) have gathered in Braamfontein as they prepare to embark on a strike on Thursday afternoon.

The union has been struggling to reach an agreement with the city over a wage dispute.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned that the M1 and M2 highways will be heavily affected by the demonstration.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said parts of Braamfontein would also be affected.

“Law enforcement officials are present on the ground to address any potential road closures and to ensure the safety and security of residents. We urge motorists to exercise caution when travelling on the mentioned routes and to seek alternative routes if faced with closures.”
