CAF Champions League Winners to Pocket US$6 Million in Prize Money Boost

Winners of Africa’s premier club competitions will walk away with unprecedented prize money in the 2025/26 season, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) raises the financial stakes.

Beyond continental glory, champions of the CAF Champions League will earn a record US$6 million, while winners of the CAF Confederation Cup will take home US$4 million.

High-Stakes Finals Await

This year’s finals promise thrilling encounters, with Mamelodi Sundowns set to face AS FAR in the Champions League decider.

In the Confederation Cup, USM Alger will battle Zamalek SC for the title, with both sides aiming to add another continental crown to their recent successes.

Significant Prize Money Increases

CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the revised prize structure, highlighting substantial increases across both competitions.

The Champions League winners’ purse has risen from US$4 million to US$6 million—a 50 percent jump. Meanwhile, the Confederation Cup prize has doubled from US$2 million to US$4 million, marking a 100 percent increase.

Clubs Eye Historic Triumphs

Mamelodi Sundowns are chasing their second Champions League title, having last lifted the trophy in 2016. Their opponents, AS FAR, are seeking to end a long wait for continental success dating back to 1985.

In the Confederation Cup, both USM Alger and Zamalek have recent pedigree, having won the competition in 2023 and 2024 respectively, setting up a tightly contested final.

Growth Under Motsepe Leadership

Since Motsepe took over in 2021, CAF competitions have experienced rapid financial growth. The Champions League winners’ prize has surged from US$2.5 million to US$6 million—an increase of 140 percent in just five years.

The Confederation Cup has seen even sharper growth, rising from US$1.25 million in 2021 to US$4 million this season, representing a 220 percent increase.

Wider Support for African Clubs

CAF has also expanded financial support beyond finalists. Clubs eliminated in the early stages of both competitions will now receive US$100,000 each—double the previous amount.

This initiative is aimed at easing travel and logistical costs, particularly for teams from less-resourced leagues, and making continental participation more sustainable.

Record Participation and Future Outlook

The enhanced financial incentives have already contributed to a record 130 clubs entering CAF interclub competitions in the 2025/26 season.

CAF says the increased investment is part of a broader strategy to elevate the quality, competitiveness, and global appeal of African club football.
