Walter Mzembi Granted US$1 000 Bail Pending Judgment in US$2 Million Fraud Case

Former Cabinet minister Walter Mzembi has been granted US$1 000 bail by the High Court in Harare as he awaits judgment in a case involving allegations of defrauding the Government of US$2 million.

Mzembi, who previously served as Tourism and Hospitality Minister, is facing charges linked to decisions made during his time in office.

Bail Conditions Imposed

The High Court ruled that Mzembi be released on bail under strict conditions. He is required to deposit US$1 000, surrender his passport, and remain at his Harare residence.

In addition, he has been ordered not to travel beyond a 30-kilometre radius from the court without permission.

Arrest and Allegations

Mzembi was arrested in June last year after returning from South Africa. The case centres on claims that he authorised the donation of television sets intended for 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks without obtaining approval from Treasury or Cabinet.

Prosecutors allege the move prejudiced the State of about US$2 million.

Delay in Release

Despite being granted bail, Mzembi has not yet been released. His lawyer, Emmanuel Samundombe, said the delay was due to an administrative mix-up involving release
