A 38-year-old man died after he was stabbed during a heated argument over US$9 in Chinhoyi’s central business district on Workers’ Day.
Police said the victim, Tinotenda Nyamukute, was attacked in broad daylight following a confrontation with Nyasha Mutodi (36) at TM North around 2pm.

Argument Over Small Debt Turns Deadly
According to police, the dispute began when Nyamukute demanded US$9 he claimed Mutodi owed him. Mutodi reportedly denied the allegation, triggering a verbal exchange that escalated quickly.
Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera said the situation turned violent during the confrontation.
Stabbing in Broad Daylight
Mutodi allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed Nyamukute once in the stomach area below the ribs.
“Mutodi charged towards the now deceased and stabbed him once on the right side of the stomach,” said Inspector Kohwera.
Nyamukute collapsed at the scene as witnesses reacted to the attack.
Attempted Escape and Arrest
Police said Mutodi tried to flee after the stabbing but was apprehended by a member of the public, Artwell Wakatama, before being handed over to Chinhoyi Central Police.
The victim was first taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital and later transferred to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare due to the severity of his injuries.
He later succumbed, with his brother reporting the death to police.
Growing Concern Over Weapons in Public Spaces
Police have raised alarm over the increasing number of people moving around with dangerous weapons in Chinhoyi, including knives and machetes, saying such items are increasingly being used in disputes.
“Such behaviour is criminal. People must value the sanctity of life and find peaceful ways to resolve disputes,” said Inspector Kohwera.
He is now in custody facing murder charges.
